Auraria Campus allows City of Denver to host migrant asylum seeker processing center onsite-May 8, 2023
Posted May 8th, 2023
The Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) has allowed the City of Denver Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to utilize space inside the 5th Street Garage located on the northwest side of the Auraria Campus, to be used as a processing center for a recent influx of migrant asylum seekers from the southern border of the United States. The City was previously processing around 25 people each day in the facility. Over the weekend, this number increased to nearly 400 people each day. Currently, there are roughly 500 people inside the garage waiting for services.
To help the city and state with this influx of travelers, the Auraria Campus is providing support where we are able. The Auraria Campus Police Department (ACPD) and additional security have been on duty to help keep the site safe and secure for all visitors to campus.
Currently, representatives from both the State of Colorado and City of Denver are onsite to assess what accommodations must be made to provide food, water, shelter and sleeping accommodations for the large group this evening in St. Cajetan’s.
The 5th Street Garage will not be accessible on Tuesday, May 9, and we do not expect any impact on graduation ceremonies or final exams this week.
Although we appreciate concern surrounding the situation and outside inquiries to support, at this time we ask that people avoid the area and visit here for more information and to inquire about migrant support in Denver.
Regular updates will be provided as they become available.
