September is National preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, a nationwide initiative designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to raise awareness about the importance of emergency preparedness at home, at work, at school and throughout our communities.

First implemented in 2004, National Preparedness Month encourages individuals and communities to build the knowledge, skills and resources they may need before, during and after an emergency.

Each year, the Auraria Campus Office of Emergency Management, in partnership with the Auraria Campus Police Department (ACPD) and campus partners, hosts activities and training opportunities designed to help students, faculty and staff become more prepared, resilient and informed.

National Preparedness Month Events & Activities

Campus Fire Drills | Aug. 27–Sept. 3

Fire drills will take place in all buildings across Auraria Campus from Aug. 27 through Sept. 3, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.*

If a fire alarm sounds, please follow evacuation procedures and directions from campus personnel. These drills provide an important opportunity to become familiar with evacuation routes and practice how to respond during an actual emergency.

Prepared Wherever You Are | Sept. 30

10–11:30 a.m. | Facilities Annex

Emergencies don’t always happen when or where we expect them. Prepared Wherever You Are is a workshop from the Auraria Campus Office of Emergency Management designed to help build a prepared, resilient and informed community by providing practical tools that can be used on campus and in everyday life.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • Prepare for emergencies that can happen anywhere
  • Create a family communication plan
  • Build an emergency kit
  • Stay informed before, during and after an emergency
  • Increase personal and household resilience
  • Take practical steps to be better prepared for unexpected situations

Preparedness is about having the knowledge and confidence to act when it matters. An emergency can happen anywhere, and learning these skills can help you better prepare to help yourself, your friends, classmates, coworkers, family and community.
