Auraria Comprehensive Study FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is this study about?

The results of this comprehensive study will be used to inform the operation of our shared campus. The goal is to identify ways to improve governance, operations, financial sustainability, and collaboration across the Auraria Campus community.

This study is part of a broader commitment to ensure the campus remains efficient, transparent, and aligned with community needs.

Why is this study happening now?

In 2025, the Colorado General Assembly passed the Auraria Higher Education Center Appropriations Act, which directs AHEC and its constituent institutions to undergo an independent, comprehensive review.

This legislation:

  • Requires a third-party study of AHEC’s operations, finances, and governance, including the optimal way to appropriate funds to AHEC.
  • Establishes clearer service and performance agreements between AHEC and the constituent institutions.
  • Strengthens accountability and transparency in how state-appropriated funds are used.
  • Seeks to ensure that resources and responsibilities are aligned across all campus partners.

Ultimately, this study supports the long-term goal of a more sustainable, collaborative, and effective campus model.

Who is leading the study?

KPMG, a nationally recognized professional services firm, is conducting this independent analysis. KPMG brings extensive experience in higher education governance, financial modeling, and organizational assessment.

How will the study be conducted?

KPMG has gathered input through data analysis, interviews, and community engagement, including open office hours where students, faculty, and staff can share their perspectives.
The study will also review:

  • Past campus plans and studies (from the past 15 years)
  • The statutory design and mission of the Auraria Campus
  • Current and alternative governance models
  • Operations, management structures, and financial frameworks
  • Recommendations for future funding and governance strategies

When and where can I share my input?

  • Tuesday, November 11 | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM in the Tivoli MultiCultural Lounge
  • Wednesday, November 12 | 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM in the Auraria Library Cafe

What topics will be discussed?

We invite feedback on:

  1. Governance and strategic alignment
  2. Operational excellence and efficiency
  3. Financial sustainability and transparency
  4. Stakeholder engagement and collaboration
  5. Campus challenges, opportunities, and future vision

What happens next?

Your feedback will inform strategic recommendations that will be shared with AHEC, the constituent institutions, and the Colorado Department of Higher Education.
The final report from KPMG will be delivered by January 30, 2026, ensuring that the recommendations align with state oversight requirements and the long-term success of the Auraria Campus.
