Summer 2026 Energy Conservation Initiative: Campus Wide HVAC Adjustments

As our campus transitions to the summer term, we have a unique opportunity to significantly reduce our campus energy consumption, carbon footprint and operational costs. Many offices and programs shift to full or partial remote work over the summer term. These office suites and program spaces remain vacant for the duration of the summer. The Auraria Campus Facilities Management team would like to invite you and your department to voluntarily sign up for a Summer Energy Savings Initiative beginning May 18, 2026. As part of the enrollment process into the program, anticipated weekly schedule and anticipated return date will be requested.

Responsible Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning

Heating and cooling account for approximately 40–50% of our total campus energy use. To maximize energy efficiency, HVAC setpoints in participating spaces will be adjusted to an “Unoccupied” mode which includes the following:

  • Temperature Adjustments: Standard cooling setpoints will be increased to 80°F.
  • Airflow Optimization: Ventilation rates will be reduced to minimize fan energy consumption.

By adjusting setpoints in vacant spaces, we expect to:

  • Reduce Energy Consumption during Peak Cooling Season
  • Reduce Carbon Emissions.
  • Extended Equipment Life

Before departing for the summer, please assist us by performing these simple steps:

  • Lower Blinds/Shades: Keeping sunlight out naturally lowers the room temperature.
  • Unplug “Vampire” Electronics: Small appliances, electronics, phone/computer chargers, coffee makers, etc. draw power even when turned off.
  • Clear Vents: Ensure no furniture or papers are blocking air supply or return grilles to maintain proper air balance in areas where vents are not integrated into the ceiling.

If your department requires a temporary adjustment for an on-campus event, please submit a Facilities Work Request at least 72 hours in advance and the space can be set back into normal operating mode for the duration of the event.

Thank you for your partnership in making our campus a leader in sustainability. We look forward to a productive, enjoyable summer.
